It’s no secret, I’ve crossed over the land of corporate burnout and came out the other side successfully, albeit with lots of challenges and lessons along the way that has been my foundation to grow into a conscious leader.
I made it my mission to provide not just my personal experiences - also the best models and practices out there when it comes to overcoming what I like to call one’s own purpose awakening.
I believe it’s a trial by fire and a rites of passage in a way for leaders to awaken and become more conscious asking questions like:
- What’s my purpose?
- Who am I, really?
- How do I fully awaken the potential inside me to make a difference to the people, causes and communities important to me?
- Can I have a career that I can be passionate about?
And if you are working for an organization that sees you as just an employee and someone to maximize their investment on, most of the leaders in your organization will think you’re nuts!
(Existential crisis level nuts)
While navigating this is a very personal, rewarding and enlightening path, what I learned is it doesn’t have to be difficult.
You don’t have to have a heart attack, health, financial or relationship breakdown to realize it.
You don’t have to actively go to war with your organization.
You don’t even have to rage quit and go on a sabbatical.
You don’t even have to hit the ground hard at maximum velocity and bounce back up in some rise from the ashes story.
That’s painful to you mentally, emotionally and financially.
What I’ve developed is a process that can make this journey fun, exciting and a tremendously liberating experience!
Now just a little more backstory...
At the core of what HR stands for in a “non-conscious company”, it’s core role is to ensure that employees remain an asset to a business with such functions as hiring, compensation, performance appraisals, payroll, training, etc.
The “top” leaders themselves usually aren’t very conscious themselves and that’s why they see the company as just tools to their strategies to make more money or achieve some purpose.
It’s a trickle down organizing effect of efficiency and command and control. As such, HR plays an incredible administrative role in these organizations.
That’s not a good or bad thing. It’s been responsible for our unprecedented material prosperity for the last century at the expense of our environmental and emotional well-being as a society.
It’s as simple as that. No fluff. Raw truth.
That's it.
Now is it evolving? Sure.
Here’s the predicament.
It’s difficult to change how the organization behaves if that’s the prevailing culture.
(It’s no different from personal change as to global systemic change, there is a formula of sorts)
Imagine that incredible momentum that had to be created just to create that level of status quo!
So the question is…
What happens when you, as a leader, who has always looked upward in the organization for guidance and experience, becomes more awakened and conscious?
When you have burning questions inside, about who you are and what you’re meant to do…
You then effectively become a virus that is about to infect the organizational immune system.
Anti-bodies like “a-hole managers”, procedures, policies, politics and the grind of day-to-day meaningless work will eat away at your will and your energy.
You feel like the disruptor of the status quo, maybe not alone in thinking, but definitely alone in action.
Chewed up and churned out into burnout conditions.
And you may think you’re a square peg in a round hole, but the reality is you’re a wrench thrown into a very well oiled self-preserving machine.
Sorry to say this - your moral righteousness will bring you into a pointless fight because you’ve just successfully subscribed yourself as a victim to your circumstances. *ouch*
The good news,It’s not a new problem.
However, it’s an extremely complicated one in a 21st century context when life is going at hyper speeds and we’re all so hyper connected.
You’re awakening to deep questions inside that most people have brought to their deathbeds centuries before you...
And it’s not immune to how it’s impacting the modern day workforce.
As an observer and strategist navigating the future of work, education and philanthropy, it’s turned into a very interesting transitory point…
If the organizational culture and beliefs only looks at people like assets, tools and some form of capital; then by nature there is an organization Ego at play that means it has the intention to have power over you.
To me, that’s a modern day manifestation of slavery - and an environment opposite to that of what would be empowering for you (and the planet)
The good news, things are changing.
It’s also changing relatively rapidly at a pace of something within your lifetime and within a generation…
While it’s not in a few years, I promise you that getting through this for yourself will leave a legacy for those to follow.
It’s a social movement. #FutureofWork
